Top Takeaways from Ben Johnson’s Press Conference

What’s going on everybody, Mike Hughes here, aka The Chi Kid, and let me tell you, that Ben Johnson introductory press conference was one for the books! The vibes at Halas Hall were immaculate. This guy, he’s a leader amongst men. Poised, a little humorous (though the media needs to work on their laugh game!), and most importantly, a man of principle. He’s got that winner’s mentality, and I’m here to break down my top 3 takeaways from Coach Johnson’s first appearance as the leader of our Chicago Bears.

1. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

This is something I’ve heard preached since high school, and it’s exactly what this Bears team needs. No more shying away from the challenge! This isn’t some “HITS principle” fluff, this is about facing adversity head-on and adapting. I’ve heard Brady, Kobe, even MJ talk about this. It’s that championship mindset, and it starts at the top. From the front office to the coaching staff, down to the players and even us fans, that’s gotta be the expectation. Get comfortable being uncomfortable!

2. How Do You Become the Best Version of Yourself?

As a high school baseball coach myself, I know how important this is. It’s about maximizing every player’s potential, from nutrition and sleep to practice habits and everything in between. We’re talking about getting the absolute best out of everyone, from Trestan Ebner to Caleb Williams. This means Cole Kmet becoming one of the best tight ends in the league, not just a blocking guy. Everyone needs to elevate their game.

3. Our Mission is to Win and Win Now!

No excuses! Forget about what we “could be” or how far away we are. We’re here to win games, and we’re here to win now. This is what I wanted to hear. Eberflus never gave me that confidence, always talking about the “HITS principle” and “identity.” Johnson’s won the division, he’s been around winners like Dan Campbell, and I believe him. He’s going to practice what he preaches.

More Than Just Talk

This wasn’t some car salesman pitch, reading off a Post-It note. Johnson spoke from the heart. He believes what he’s saying. And you know what? He’s going to be held accountable for it. If Cole Kmet, or DeAndre Swift aren’t utilized correctly, I’m calling him out! You gotta stand on what you say.

The Future is Now

Back-to-back years, we got the number one guy! Caleb Williams in ’24, Ben Johnson in ’25. Add in our high draft pick (the exact position may change depending on trades), and I’m fired up! This next six to eight months will dictate the next 10 years for the Bears. Either we got our guy and this is something special, or it’s the same old Bears and Johnson’s just another Trestman or Gase. Only time will tell, but I’m riding this wave of optimism!

Bear Down!
